I was taking a walk along Orchard Road outside Takashimaya with my mum at around 9pm on Sunday night when an elderly man and an even more elderly lady who had difficulty walking approached us and asked us whether we could buy them dinner.
We brought them to the side and asked them to sit down and wait for us while we went downstairs to buy them dinner. We took probably around 10-15 minutes. When we went up, they were not there anymore.
I said a prayer at that instant, praying that hopefully some kind soul brought them somewhere else for dinner. I guess the elderly pair thought that we were insincere in helping them and had no intention of buying them food, but were just trying to run away. On hindsight, one of us should have stayed to accompany the couple, while the other one of us went down to buy food. But it begs the question, has the pair been disappointed and rejected so many times by the endless passer-bys streaming past them the entire evening, that they have no more faith left in humanity?
